During the second world war, a German plane landed in my father's backyard, and then took off again. My father at 3 years old, was hiding under the bed. He was later taken from his mother and carted out of London in the tragic deportations that took place. When he told me this story, his comment to me was that he wondered what happened to that pilot and was hopeful that he had survived. If that doesn't say something about the resiliance of the human heart and compassion, I don't know what does. We all have a blood-red miracle beating in our chests.
